Air ConditioningComponentsCompressor

Air Conditioning Compressor:

The Air Conditioning Compressor is driven by the Serpentine belt on the front of the engine. The Belt wraps around the front of the compressor on its Clutch. When the Air Conditioning system is switched on is sends and electrical signal to the Air Conditioning Compressor's Clutch and causes it to engage. The compressor starts to turn and COMPRESS the freon until an in-line pressure limit switch kicks it off and then back on again.

DIAGNOSE
There are two wires that attach to the compressor. One needs to be a battery negative and the other battery positive. Make sure it has Battery negative and apply battery positive to the other and see if the clutch clicks in. This can be done with engine on or off.
REPLACE
This should be done by a qualified technician only. The A/C System needs to be evacuated first. A machine is used in most cases to remove any existing freon from the system. Then just remove the drive belt, hoses and a few bolts. For specific removal procedures get an Online Repair Manual
